I don't think it's true that ALL laws have a moral basis--many of them are
simply convenience rules. It's no more moral to drive on the left side of
the road than on the right--but it is essential to achieve local consensus.
Laws against perjury have a moral basis, but laws about timing of lawsuits
do not.
In fact, history as well as science fiction is replete with laws that have
an _immoral_ basis, from laws regulating slavery and Nazi racial laws to, I
suspect, the endless Federation statutes that put everyone at a more or less
chronic risk of endless prison terms or summary execution.

crewmembers are represented by Down & Safe, Professional Corporation.

It was shown in Britain loooong ago, but the episode of The Bill with Glynis
Barber in it, from what I can work out from assorted episode guides, will be
shown by the ABC on May 9.

This has been a community service announcement, for the Australians at
least.

Could you people better than me on background and plot (oh, say, the revered
editor of the 7encyclopedia, just for an for example) help me out? What
evidence and indicators - if any - do we have of how *long* the battle at
Star One/whole Andromedan War lasted?

Many thanks

Just a quick one to say that anyone who can get their hands on a copy of the
Guardian newspaper will find that Blake's 7 is featured in the Pass Notes
collumn in the G2 section of the paper. For those of you unfamiliar with it
Pass Notes takes a tongue-in-cheek look at things or people who are in the
news in on way or another. Most of it consists of teh usual 'humourous'
commenst about wobbly effects and 70's fashions, but it does mention the up
and coming films as well.

Hey - I suppose any exposure is good exposure.

I'm not sure if it's worth buying the whole paper for but if you see a stray
copy lying around then have a read.

Dorian - "You mean you're here by choice?"

In response to Calle's request, and that of a couple of other people too,
here is the next installment of information about the Blake's 7 role-playing
game that I have been running for about two years.

The last post detailed the general background and characters, this one
starts at the first adventure. Hope you find it interesting.

More role-playing stuff - I did warn you! :)

The game started out on the planet Hastin. Hastin is an independent world in
Sector 7, outside of Federation control. The planet has a couple of medium
sized landmasses and a great deal of ocean. The main settlement area is on
the Northern Hemisphere and contains the capital Hastin City. One of the
central features of Hastin City is a large scientific research complex. The
city also contains an administration centre, a busy spaceport and a vibrant
criminal fraternity. As Hastin is outside Federation control is attracts
many criminals and smugglers looking to offload goods or hide from pursuit.
As this brings necessary revenue into the city the authorities largely
ignore it and so the respectable and the criminal live happily side by side.

Also on the main landmass is a series of ruins indicating the presence, at
one time, of an alien civilisation on Hastin. These ruins are only now being
uncovered and, as of yet, have not been properly investigated.

About eight months before the start of the game scientists working at the
research complex discovered high concentrations of a valuable mineral in
solution in the sea water and work was started on a series of water
treatment plants to extract and
process the mineral. As a result of this Hastin is beginning to become much
wealthier.

Prior to this discovery the Federation were happy to leave Hastin alone, it
was of no strategic value and there was nothing there that they wanted. The
discovery of the mineral deposits has however changed this.

The game starts with the characters of Felix, Brennan, and Issac already on
Hastin:

Brennan has been on the planet for six months and has been working at the
research centre, putting his medical knowledge to good use. He has worked
extensively with Dr Daris Morstan and has gained her respect and affection.
Turing this time a Federation Pursuit Ship has crashed on the surface of the
planet and a badly damaged Mutiod (Maya) has been rescued from the wreckage.
Brennan and Daris have worked together on reconstructing her and now, with
her programming wiped, she works with them at the research centre. Also
working closely with them is Pletrac. Brennan is happy here on Hastin and
believes that he might, finally, be able to put his recent past behind him.

Issac has been on the planet for about six weeks and is working as a
mechanic at the spaceport. He has a history of petty criminal activities
and, although he has never been caught, he is eager to stay one step ahead
of the Federation.

Felix is a trader and occasional smuggler. He has been on Hastin for about
three days. He was smuggling a cargo for a contact when he was attacked by a
Federation Patrol. He managed to escape but his ship was badly damaged and
so he made his way to Hastin to get it repaired.

Brennan has gained the enmity of a member of base personnel, Dr Maric, who
resents Brennan's rapid acceptance and the position that he has gained. He
has learnt that Brennan is a cybersurgeon on the run and, having listened to
Federation reports, believes him to be Lurgen, for whom the Federation is
searching. Maric is a secret supporter of the Federation and believes that
they are a force for good and order. He contacts them and reports 'Lurgen's'
whereabouts. The (supposed) presence of a wanted man on Hastin gives the
Federation the excuse they need to invade.

The attack occurs at dusk, Federation ships arrive in the atmosphere and
begin to drop gas canisters, troops disembark from the ships and begin
throwing gas grenades and clubbing citizens to the ground.

The game proper begins for the players when their characters recover
consciousness locked in a laboratory at the research station. Along with
them are the three prominent NPCs Dr Morstan, Maya and Pletrac. They begin
to interact with each other and try to find a way out of their predicament.

The Federation forces, under the command of Major Beloc, broadcast to the
planet, demanding to know the whereabouts of Lurgen. (This caused some
interesting role-playing amongst the group, as they knew that Brennan was a
cybersurgeon (Dr Morstan mentioned it) and only had his word for it that he
wasn't the man that the Federation were looking for.) The Federation then
imposed martial law and a curfew and allowed the planet's inhabitants to
(mostly) go about their business.

The characters rapidly escaped from the lab and, with a little help from
Maya, managed to overpower a couple of guards and get their uniforms and
guns. (I have found it very useful to have a fully combat-trained NPC in a
group who mostly can't shoot straight to save their lives. To be fair though
they are getting better. Slowly.) They then left the compound (after a
brief, and surprisingly non-violent, confrontation with Dr Maric, during
which he revealed that he had called the Federation.) and began searching
for information and for a way off the planet.

They managed to find out some information from a group of construction
workers in a bar and rapidly realised that the Federation was never going to
leave Hastin alone and so the best thing for them to do was leave. Felix and
Brennan broke into the spaceport compound, leaving Issac (disguised as a
guard) patrolling the outside. This led to an amusing moment when Issac was
approached by a commanding officer who spoke to him at length about a small
group of prisoners who had escaped from the Research Centre. J
Felix inspected the damage to his ship and realised that it wasn't in a fit
state for them to escape in and so they had to steal another. Felix was left
to make the decision about which ship to take (he is the pilot after all.)
whilst Brennan checked out a workshop as a suitable hiding place and
gathered the other characters together. Once there Issac set about adapting
a couple of communicators to work on a different frequency from the standard
Federation one and Pletrac began making some primitive and powerful
explosives.

I presented Felix with a choice of four ships which was really no choice at
all. The first was a Federation Pursuit ship - fast, well armed and powerful
it was also far too small for all six characters. The second was a cargo
vessel - plenty of space for all of the characters and very inconspicuous,
it was also old, slow and poorly armed. The third was an expensive personal
vessel - sleek, fast and luxurious it was also only lightly armed and would
have been a bit cramped for all of them. The final ship (and the one that I
wanted them to go for) was Major Beloc's command cruiser! (I was using
Sleer's command cruiser from Animals etc as a model for this.) It was ideal
for them - plenty of space, fast and well armed. The only drawback was it
conspicuousness. Hey ho - you can't have everything. J

The characters formulated a plan to steal Beloc's Command Cruiser, the
Icarus. This involved planting a series of explosives underneath some nearby
(by not too nearby!) Pursuit Ships in order to provide a diversion and cut
down the potential pursuit, using some of Felix's undelivered cargo of
weapons (some gas grenades) and infiltrating the ship in Federation uniform.
Felix also wanted to transfer his cargo from his ship to the Command
Cruiser, as he was committed to delivering it after escaping from Hastin. It
was also decided to blow up the wreck of Felix's ship as this would add to
the confusion and make it more difficult for the Federation to identify
Felix.

The crew split up in order to carry out the various stages of the plan.
Unfortunately upon returning to the workshop that the group were using as a
temporary base Brennan found Pletrac unconscious and Beloc waiting for him.
Beloc rapidly realised that Brennan wasn't Lurgen but recognised him from
Federation wanted briefings, (The Federation is very keen to get Brennan
back and use his research into artificial telepathy in order to create a
group of telepathic undercover agents. He is listed as a highly wanted
felon.) and realised that arresting Brennan would almost certainly get him a
commendation. They talked for some time (in the best tradition of
villain/hero confrontations.) before a shot rang out and Dr Morstan appeared
at the top of the stairs aiming a gun at Beloc. (She had been upstairs
dozing when Beloc had entered the workshop and having been woken up by his
conversation with Brennan had been waiting for the right moment to affect a
rescue. The mental image of a plump, respectable and slightly matronly
scientist armed with a Federation weapon and righteous indignation appealed
to me! Think Hattie Jaques from the Carry On films with a big gun…)

Between them she and Brennan tied Beloc up and waited for the others to
return. Felix, Brennan, Maya and Issac then boarded the Federation ship and
attached the gas canisters to the shipboard ventilation system and gassed
the remaining crew. Unfortunately a couple of Mutiods were unaffected and so
a short firefight occurred, which the characters won with only minor
injures. Pletrac and Daris then joined the other characters on the Icarus,
taking Beloc with them as a hostage. Issac and Felix then transferred the
cargo from Felix's crippled ship onto the Icarus. Well, actually they took
advantage of their stolen Federation uniforms to order a couple of
technicians to do it!

It was then time for a goodbye. Daris announced that she wouldn't be going
with them and that she was intending to stay on Hastin and form a resistance
group to fight the Federation occupation. Whilst most of the characters
weren't too bothered by this Brennan, who had formed an emotional attachment
to Daris during the time they had worked together, was rather upset and an
emotional moment ensued. (I love my role-players - not afraid to shy away
from genuine emotional moments!) Pletrac (my NPC) was also rather upset at
the separation.

Unfortunately the bodies of the unconscious crewmembers that the characters
had dumped, in what they thought was a secure place, outside the Icarus,
were found and the alarm raised. Troops began to move towards the Icarus.
Felix and Maya began pre-flight checks and fired up the engines whilst
Brennan ('I'd forgotten how much I hate space travel.') and Issac secured
Beloc and then strapped themselves. Meanwhile Pletrac used his radio
transmitter to blow up the pre-planted bombs, thus causing chaos in the
compound and badly damaging two Federation Pursuit Ships.

The Icarus then took off, swiftly followed by two of the remaining Pursuit
Ships. During the confusion, Daris who had been watching events from hiding
slipped out of the compound and went to start forming local resistance.

The Icarus quickly cleared the atmosphere and turned to face the Pursuit
Ships. A space battle ensued with Felix maneouvering the ship and Maya
operating the weapons and forcewall. The Icarus was victorious, although it
sustained some damage, and the two Pursuit Ships were destroyed. The crew
then debated what to do next, of particular concern was what they should do
with Major Beloc. Felix was keen to deliver his cargo of arms and the others
had no real ideas either way and so it was agreed. After a short stop off on
the next planet out from Hastin (an uninhabited, icy planet) to check the
damage to the ship and drop off Beloc, (the characters decided that they
didn't want to kill him (they're too nice by far) and that leaving him to be
found by his subordinates with a homing beacon and some food would be a
better solution. They also believed that allowing him to live would make him
think more favourably of them after they stole his ship. How wrong can one
group of people be??!) The Icarus set off for the jungle planet Carsis
where they were to deliver a cache of arms to a group of rebels led by a
woman called Avalon….

And that's the first scenario. It might not sound like much but at the rate
that we play it did take us several weeks to finish. (We only play once a
week from 7:30 - 10:30, not everyone arrives on time and we do spend some
time chatting about what we have been up to since the previous week before
we start.) Also, of course there was a great deal of detail and character
interaction that I have skimmed over in an attempt at brevity. The next post
will detail events on Carsis.

Avon's costume from Ultraworld is up for sale. This is an original costume and
in very good condition apart from a few missing studs. I'm selling it on behalf
of a friend.

There's a photo (taken yesterday) on my web site which shows how it
currently looks.

The current bid is 850 pounds.

Please send all bids to me - I'd appreciate it if bids came in steps of 50
pounds.

Feel free to forward this message to anyone else who might be interested.

I don't know if any of you collect odd little fanzines/newsletters, but I
have an undated copy of BLINKERS OFF which is a m/m fanzine put out by Sean
(no last name) and Paul Arthur which comes from Norwich. I am assuming
that this is a recent fanzine, though I have no clue why. There are 7
articles, three of which are on Dr Who and one on Blake's 7. If any of you
want it, I will send it to you free. Contact me offline with a name and an
address to mail it to. JEB31538@cs.com

The article on B7 is a review of Tony Attwood's AFTERLIFE. It's 4 and 1/2
pages and is written by Craig Price. It's basically a plot review with a few
comments stuck in. The review is basically favorable

It's not that long so here goes:

Blake's Seven
===========

<blurry photo of Tarrant, Dayna, Avon and Cally>

AGE: Born 22 years ago, killed off at the age of three.

APPEARANCE: Characterised by 70s superflicks, rayon costumes with triangular
applique motifs and wobbly bacofoil sets.

STATUS: Deeply silly space series about seven freedom fighters resisting an
evil federation that has seized control of earth and its colonies,
controlling them through sedative drugs and fear.

I LOVE GRITTY, REAL-LIFE DRAMA. TELL ME MORE. Roj Blake, the impressively
quiffed leader, commanded the septet's space vessel, the Liberator.

AND WHO WERE THE SEVEN? Well, there's Jenna, the Farrah Fawcett-lookalike
pilot; maverick computer technician Avon; Vial, a cowardly thief; big,
stupid Gan; and Cally, a telepath from the planet Auron.

THAT'S ONLY SIX. Well, I've never really counted Zen, the on-board computer.

NEXT YOU'LL BE SAYING TIMMY THE DOG WASN'T REALLY ONE OF THE FAMOUS FIVE.
Don't be silly, everyone knows Timmy was a canine replicant accidentally
transmogrified while visiting from the planet Zorg.

HOW DID THEY MEET THEIR END? FROWNING IN SOME OF AVON'S FOAM BATH LOTION?
No, that old dodgy sopa staple, the hail of bullets. Motionless corpses
leaving addicts on tenterhooks as to which characters would survice.

BUT SURELY NONE OF THEM SURVIVED? Not unless you count the afterlife of
Soolin, aka actor Glynis Barber, as one half of 80s cops Dempsey and
makepeace. And Gareth Thomas the actor behind Blake, is set to play David
Baddiel's father in his forthcoming series on Sky.

SO THERE IS A HEAVEN? Well, there certainly may be a resurrection. Prompted
by the serie's continuing popularity on cable, the producers have announced
they are to make a new movie for TV, and possibly another series.

SURELY NOT ENOUGHT TO LURE BLAKE AWAY FROM BADDIEL? There is no news as yet
on whether Thomas will reprise his role, but Paul Darrow, who played Avon,
is expected to be back with a foaming vengeance.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH: The Birmingham Six.

Sorry, I couldn't restrain myself:

But Julia, please understand that this is living vicariously for those of us
who always wanted to get into Avon's pants.

Sigh.

I am incorrigible.

Given that there's now four of us getting a photo from Equus, I guess I'd better
ask if anyone else wants one before I mail off the cheque.

The photo I'm going for is a black and white one of Gareth in profile. He's
sitting in a chair, chin resting on his hands and looking at something out of
the frame of the picture (the psychiatrist's patient). It's a fairly stark
portrait with strong light/shade contrast. The background is almost black.
Landscape format.

The size is 8x10 inches and the cost is 8 pounds. I'm assuming UK postage +
packing will add 60p to that and Europe about 1.30pounds and US/AUS 1.45pounds

If you want one, tell me fairly quickly so that I can order them all together.
You can pay me by cheque in pounds or we can do it by credit card for a 1.50
pound extra cost.

I shall use that as an excuse the next time I wear the original costume
that I own.

Oh I agree, the time line for the whole series is rather creative. But what
I'm trying to decipher is a vague ballpark figure - weeks? Months? Bits of
Series 3 & 4 indicate the latter, but from Star One/Aftermath it seems less…

Yay, Avon! Sometimes I really get annoyed with myself for not asking for
those salty little fish just because other people wrinkle their noses in
disgust.
And the penguins agree.
