My boyfriend intoduced me to Blake's 7 some time ago. At first I was very reluctant to watch the series because I normally really don't like Science Fiction. But then I finally gave in and watched The Way Back. I really liked it, and I finished the 52 episodes pretty quickly. And now I'm a big fan!! I'm almost done watching the whole thing for the second time now. It will be interesting to read what other people think of Blake's 7, and maybe I'll even express my own ideas from time to time. As long as you don't mind the characters being magic-weilding teenagers, subject to moments of extreme humor. (Oh, if you like the political aspects of Blake's 7, there is a lot of political in-fighting among mosters; if you like to try to make sense of the Federation's history, the show is loaded with references to past events; if you like it for the science, I've noticed that there's a strong connection between physiology and magic and am trying to work out the details.) Just as Blake's 7 took space opera and gave it shades of gray, the Slayers are at the core of heroic fantasy, where the forces of light and darkness collide. However, they don't stand squarely in the light. Lina Inverse (the main character) is a sorceress of astonishing power. At the tender age of 16, she's already established a reputation, but as a bandit killer. She says she goes after bandits because they are the ones with the money. While it is obviouis she has a mercenary streak, she's also caved in to villians who used innocents as hostages. I might think of her as a blend of several B7 characters, sort Blake's leadership and determination, Vila's mercenary and hedonist streak (food is her weakness, rather than alcohol), and occaisional moments of bloodthirst rivalling Dayna's. Zelgadis Greywyrs is going to be fascinating to those who like Avon's personality. He is hard on the outside as well as the inside, having been turned into a stoney human-demon-golem chimera. He seeks a cure for his condition, but he always seems to end up getting involved in Lina's business. He's sardonic and a loner, with better dress sense than his teammates, and a fondness for the team leader that he keps mostly concealed. Sound familiar? Serious, this guy is right up there with Avon, including the charisma. Gourry Gabriev has no clear conterpart in Blake's 7, because NONE of them are as STUPID as he is. But if Tarrant suffered severe brain damage, I guess that would be Gourry. The traditional hero, tall, handsome and muscular... only, in this case, having the mental processes of about a 5 year-old. Okay, he's nothing like a Blake's 7 character, but he gives Lina and Zelgadis someone to insult. Amelia-- well, some people see Blake as all gung-ho for Truth and Justice? Amelia is like the worst, most cartoonish version of Blake ever to come out of the pen of someone too busy drooling over Avon to notice Blake had quite a bit of realism himself. She actually talks about Justice all thee time, and you can hear the capital letters when she does it. ::shudder:: I hope I haven't put someone off of checking this out-- it's played for comedy, and she doesn't get that much air time. Xellos (spoiler) turns out to be a member of the monster race. They are considered to be evil personified, but he's helping Lina fight other monsters. Which brings up a slew of questions as to whether they are doing more good or harm in the long term... Actually, there are very few British ones with B7 in them either. OLD Starlogs have some B7 in them--and if you wish me to list the issue numbers in the next day or two I can do that. But some of these back issues are NOT available. They are OOP. I'd say offhand that Starlog is a general basic sci-fi magazine, but you will find nothing B7 in its current offerings. In the US, almost every bookstore carries Starlog. I have no clue if Canada is the same. It can be subscribed to. For British magazines, if you wish, I can, also, supply a list of OLD UK sci-fi issues with B7 in them. It'd make quite a list--but unfortunately, I don't distinguish between a lot of B7 content or just some content. And, unfortunately, a lot of them are OOP. However, since you are from the UK, you are very familiar with the major UK magazines ---TV Zone, Starburst, Cult Times, Dreamwatch, or SFX. These can be ordered on a subscription basis, but it's damn expensive. If money is a concern, then Starlog is your best bet. If money is not a concern, then I would suggest you subscribe to your favorite of the UK magazines. IF you cannot find magazines in your local bookstores, and don't wish to subscribe to one, then you can buy single issues of old to fairly current magazines through Larry's Comic Bookstore in Chicago. I can send you the information to order a catalog in a future posting. For us Americans, he's very reasonable. I am assuming he would, also, be reasonable for Canadians, too. His service is good.
