Feh. I couldn't get past "Once there was a little rebel named Blake
whose government had warned him never to go walking in the deep, dark
woods outside the dome." But, you know, "The Way Back" simply doesn't
map onto "Goldilocks." :)

Well, I don't know about Goldilocks, but once there was a little boy
names Avon (Avon would deeply resent being called a rebel but, on a good
day, might be coolly amused with anyone who called him a little boy
[especially if it was someone he wanted to keep off guard while his
friends planted bombs all over the person's space ship]). Despite this,
Avon was called (when he couldn't overhear) the Little Red, Rebel Hood.
Why red is unclear, since Avon favored black except for one rather
unfortunate outfit not seen for years. Some people said it had something
to do with the trail of carnage (or was that trail of Carnell? or was it
Trial of... But I digress).

One day, while carrying a basket of goodies (and, believe me, they were
real basket cases, although Avon's assertion that he carried them all
through the series with no help from Blake has been debated [to be
honest, so has the goodies, but since the baddies were so bad that just
about anyone not guilty of genocide looked pretty nice, the it's not the
loudest argument]), Avon was looking for the way to Blake's house. You
wouldn't think that would be so hard to do, him being a galactically
famous psychopathic criminal or hero, depending on which news service you
listened to, but it was. One would almost think it was a deliberate
snub, but Avon knew better since without him Blake would have no one to
carry him at all.

But, little did Avon know there was an evil wolf in the forest (some say
this meaning to the word wolf should only be applied to males. Those
people never met this wolf). There she was, in her long, black evening
gown with little twinkles sewn into it and high heeled shoes (on her
feet, not the gown). "Oh, Little Red - I mean, Avon, if you are looking
for Blake's house, just go right over there into the pretty meadow of
flowers." Actually, it is regretably true that she said some things
besides that which you think even a wolf would have been embarassed to
try and slip into a children's story like this, but that's the way she
was. Fortunately, Avon ignored her and the editor caught the stuff in
time.

"That field?" Avon said, "The one that says 'Warning: Terminal'?"

"Precisely." said the wolf.

"The one with the triple jawed snakes and murderous ape men?"

"You've got it."

"OK." said Little Red, Rebel Hood. The wolf smirked because, if there
was one thing she'd learned about LRRH, it was that he never turned down
a chance to look for Blake, no matter who offered it, even if he turned
down everything else she offered (warning, warning: the editor is very
angry that the previous slipped through and wants to speak to the wolf
_right now_).

Well, off LRRH went, carrying his basket case of goodies with him. There
was trouble and mayhem and, by the time they left, there wasn't much off
a flower field left either.

"Where did you find the teddy bear?" one of the goodies asked.

"Never mind." said LRRH, "Let's get back on plot and keep looking for
Blake's house."

"Can't we have a new plot?"

"Like what? Trying to find a new ally and getting stabbed in the back
each episode?"

Even the basket case of goodies could see that wasn't a very sensible way
to go, so off they went.

Unfortunately, the wolf had gotten to Blake's house first. She knocked
on the door. "Little Blake, let me in."

"Not by the hair of my - Hey, wait a second! That's the wrong story!"

"Oops, sorry. Blame the editor."

(The editor would like to point out that wolves never take responsibility
for their own command decisions and the disasters they cause)

"I won't let you in." Blake said, "You're an evil wolf."

"No, I'm not." the wolf said, "I'm really a rebel sympathizer being
chased by evil bounty hunters."

"Oh, in that case, mi casa es su casa."

So the wolf came in and hid in the closet (the editor is no way crazy
enough to let this wolf anywhere near nightclothes [even if they are the
long, high collared, extra-frilly sort with long underwear and a silly,
lacy bonnet on top] much less any other room than the very formal front
parlor with a chaperone and the large front window where all the
nieghbors can see what's going on. She is not to be trusted,
understand?). Then Avon and the basket came along. "Blake," Avon said,
"What a really ugly eye scar you have."

"All the better to freak out the kiddies, my dear."

"Blake, what an interesting cross between unwashed mountain man and
pirate king wardrobe you have."

"All the better to look memorable and impressive, even on a small screen,
my dear."

"Blake, what an awful lot of Federation guards you have descending on
us."

"I set this up. Tarrant doesn't understand. Avon, I was waiting for
you."

Bang! Bang! Bang! Also some rat-a-tat-tats and a few laser special
effects. By the time the dust had cleared, Avon was the only one left
standing in the room. Then the wolf jumped out of the closet with a
bunch more Federation guards. "Hah-hah, Little Red, Rebel Hood!" the
wolf crowed (now that it looked like he was finished, the gloating wolf
really enjoyed using the hated LRRH nickname), "You're basket of goodies
is done for! Your friends are gone! Blake was innocent, which you would
know if you only gave him a chance to explain!"

"Boy," Avon said, "I sure feel stupid."

"You're about to feel dead! But, first, hand over that teddy bear!"

A deadly light came into LRRH eyes, and those who thought the first R had
to do with lots of red liquid that didn't come from a tomato weren't
necessarily betting on the wolf (even though it was clear even Avon
couldn't get out of this one). When, suddenly -

They cut to credits.

But, after that, in came the editor and woodsperson (or, to be honest,
wood pulp person, also known as paper, which is what editing is all about
except for the online kind), who said, "Back, evil wolf! I am about to
defeat you with PGP fiction."

"Hah!" said the wolf, "I have an ax, a fan base, and royalties!"

"Double hah!" said the editor, "I have an eraser! And, in fan fiction,
the person with the pen is _always_ mightier than the sword." Which
didn't really fit, since we're talking axes and erasers, but editors are
allowed some poetic license.

"I won't give up!" the wolf said, "Even your reruns will be cancelled!"

"Grr!" said the editor, who was getting a tad hot under the collar, "No
more Mr. Nice Guy! _I know a furrier_!"

So the editor and the PGPs won. LRRH was saved, as were the basket of
goodies and even Blake, depending on who's writing. And they and their
fur rug lived happily ever after.

Until the next episode, because, with this bunch, happy endings cause
severe disorientation and decompression problems.

We know one or two people have been having trouble using the 'buy me' buttons on
our web site. The common factor is that they are all using Microsoft Internet
Explorer version 4 (It seems to work okay for other versions of the same
browser)

If anyone who considers themself computer-literate and uses that particular
browser, we'd appreciate help in finding a workable solution.

Please e-mail Richard on Richard@Waveney.org if you can help.

Thanks,

Jessica said re Avon and Jenna:
<I'm not saying that he would have been too distressed if something happened
to Jenna somewhere in the not-too-distant future but I doubt he would have
done it himself.>

Possibly not (though, *if* he could have brought himself to off Blake at any
point after Cygnus Alpha, I really think he'd've found it easier to
contemplate doing the same to Jenna. But as he says ... Blake's first. And
that proves rather harder than he would admit).

But you try and persuade *Jenna* of that. As I said, he convinced her pretty
well that he wasn't to be trusted (see her expression in the teleport scene
in Time Squad, and that sharp "what did you do?" five minutes later) and
from what I can see, she doesn't trust his motives from then on (right to
Star One.) Simply, I don’t think she'd have a bar of keeping him anywhere
near her. And he has no intention of leaving the Liberator ...

Maybe they are alike, yes, but how many of us find it easy to work with
people who have our own faults? And IMHO Jenna's one of the crew members
Avon may care mildly about *as* a crew member, but has next to no interest
in as a human being; they only work together in the series because of their
mutual links to the others (witness that rare moment almost-snuggly moment
in Redemption, and Avon's distinctly less-than- snuggly attitude <g>).
Without the others - who wouldn't have been there if they'd ditched Blake,
after all - mutual suspicion and self-interest would have caused a cropper
very very fast.

Pretend you're Servalan. She can carry off anything. Might

*Anything??* (Mentally dressing a Servie doll in the pink and lime green

Not quite, Mistral. Sorry. But OTOH, that's not a bad punishment for her
sins ... in hell (or Sally's PGP land) Servalan is forced to wear fluffy
cutesy lacy bridesmaid's dresses for the rest of her (probably unatural)
life.

And flat shoes.

Actually, if I had a full set, that could make a change from model
cricketers when I get round to decorating a 40th birthday cake in a year or

Ooh, yes, he's just as cuddly as a black Siamese I once knew--as
long as *he* wants to be, else watch out for the claws! Mind, he did
push Servalan away in Aftermath (with Mistral cheering him on).
And he didn't seem a bit happy about Max shaking his hand.

Ohhh ... what a *wonderful* idea!!!!!!!!!!!

I could line them up on the computer, with my Marvin the Martian (BTW, has

twenty-year-old cornflake-packet space aliens (don't snigger - they're

Yeessss ... I did once have this mental picture of Avon as a cat who's
happily shredding everything (and everyone) around him, and Blake (and later
Vila) acting as a sort of scratching post to take the worst of the clawing
from everyone else ...

Of course, with these two the scratching post can claw back.

Yes, it was, whatever it might say on the box. The end of one scene was
cut, changing its meaning, and a completely different take was
substituted in another scene, again changing it.

Maybe we should add this one to the FAQ:-)

I think you're right about Avon being sort of cat-like. I always thought of
Vila as a shaggy puppy with golden fur, most cats i've ever known would
consider that the perfect scratching post.

Hi there everybody...

I'm new. And I thought it would be rude to just sit here and lurk so I'll
introduce myself. Firstly I have to say how great it is to find a bunch of
similarly mad B7 fans, now I don't have to sit at home and mumble to myself
:o) I shouls also point out that I've not seen all the episodes.. as far as
I can remember! I watched them 1st time round when I was rather young, and
am now building up a video collection, so I'm still refreshing my memory
(I've got as far as.. Countdown) I would say I'm a big Avon fan, but I think
you would all nod your heads knowingly.
I own a white motorbike called.. what do u think a B7 fan would call a white
motorbike? And of course a couple of lovely black leather jackets.

OK I'll stop wittering on now, oh, just have to say.. loved the bedtime
story!
>' "I am Death," he said, in a voice like the opening of a lover's >burial
>casket '
That is just a *wonderful* phrase :o)

Oh, one last thing.. I'm a mural painter, so if anyone would like to
commission a B7 mural.. ;o) http://surf.to/murals

But the batting instinct is still there, as I have seen proven by a certain
Bagpuss, who might be described as Death Warmed Up But Only Very Slightly.
Nevertheless, whenever he was sprawled out in the garden on a warm summer's
day, woe betide any grasshopper that strayed into batting range.

Actually, come winter time, Bagpuss would warm up quite a lot, sometimes
migrating from the kitchen worktop to the dining room table several times in
a single day. The batting instinct was practiced on the second hand of the
kitchen clock.

The Fearmongers

review by Judith Proctor

I didn't really expect to like this CD and only bought it because Jacqueline
Pearce was in it. Although I've caught various bits of Dr Who over the years,
it's never been a major interest of mine and Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred
were probably my least favourite doctor and companion pairing.

What can I say, except that I've become a convert.

The writer is Jonathan Blum and he deserves serious credit. This is a man who
thinks in terms of audio. The whole story is one that is ideal for the medium
and well thought-out use of sound effects enhances this. If he'd written the
Blake's 7 radio plays, we might have had something far better than Barry Letts.
(I have to add that I've never heard/read anything by Blum before, but I'd
certainly consider buying another audio by him.)

Listening to the play a second-time, I could find a few minor nit-picks in the
plot, but they're the kind that are carefully designed to lead the audience down
the garden path. And I duely trod the path <grin>. The red herrings were very
good ones and when I thought I'd outsmarted the writer and twigged what was
really going on, I was wrong - and the real explanation was a beauty.

I loved the relationship between the Doctor and Ace - mutual sparks, strong
respect, friendship, fast retorts and totally platonic. There were some
excellent lines of dialogue, and well-delivered too.

Anyway, I digress. Most of you will be reading this review because you want to
know what Jackie was like. I was a little disappointed in one way - I was
hoping to hear her in a different type of part (one reason why I enjoy her
performance in Soldiers of Love so much), but she's playing a very Servalan-type
character. Indeed, the very name, Sherilyn sounds a bit like Servalan.
Sherilyn Harper is a politician of an extremist right-wing party. Think of
Servalan crossed with Margaret Thatcher and you'll have the character about
right. It's a good performance - in her opening speech I was thinking 'Margaret
Thatcher' rather than 'Servalan'.

So what's the story actually about? Well, I don't want to give too much of the
plot away, but the Fearmonger is a creature that feeds off emotions,
specifically fear. It inhabits a human host and uses that host to influence
those around it. It creates situations where people feel frightened - hence its
interest in Harper and her New Britannia party.

The production standards are great. When there is music it is used to good
effect. Sound effects paint a picture without ever overdoing it. The cast were
all enjoyable. What more is there to say?

The story is divided into four episodes which works well, but also leads to my
only serious complaint on an otherwise excellent product. If you stop at the
end of an episode then you don't know which track to go back to next time.
There's nothing anywhere on the case or the enclosed booklet to tell you that
episode 2 starts on disc 1 track 7 and episode 4 starts on disc 2 track 6.

PS. There's a batch of audio trailers on the end of the second disc. I'm
seriously considering buying a Bernice Summerfield story and I've never even
read any of the novels with her in...

PPS. There's copies for sale on http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7

Here it is at last - Chris Boucher's second Star Cops novel, with a stunning
cover by Pete Wallbank. This may be the best-looking zine I've ever produced
(though if you aren't a Star Cops fan, the art may not mean as much).

Star Cops was Chris's own series. It only ran to nine episodes, but it was real
SF. The limitations were those of real science - no force fields, ftl travel,
etc. The Star Cops are a hard-pressed police force trying to solve crimes
committed on the moon and on stations in Earth orbit.

Some of you will already have read 'An Instinct for Murder' the first novel; now
we have 'Little Green Men and Other Stories', the write-up of another four
episodes that Chris wrote himself.

You don't have to have seen the series, the books stand on their own. Indeed,
the special effects are better in the books as Chris wrote them the way he
wanted things to be rather than the way budget sometimes forced them to appear
on screen. I would read the books in order though - Chris uses continuity and
there's a few clues to events in the later book in the first one.

Ordering details and the cover art can be found on http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7

Possibly Tarrant (although possibly not until later in the series).
Let's face it, when Scorpio was going down on Guada Prime, whoever flew
it wasn't likely to survive. Tarrant only talked Avon out of taking his
