Good advice, but they can only be so up to date. The only thing that's
going to protect you from the virus that sweeps the world in 24 hours is
your own common sense.

Also probably very good advice, but how many people can be bothered? Or
have the technical know-how?

There's no substitute for common sense, but common sense these days
includes running a good virus-checker as well as not opening strange
attachments. (Even attachments which you requested and expected should be
checked before opening, in case something managed to sneak in unbeknownst
to the sender.)

>Also probably very good advice, but how many people can be bothered? Or
>have the technical know-how?

It doesn't take any more technical know-how to install, say, Eudora than
any other piece of software. We're talking about common consumer-oriented
programs here, not esoteric techie-stuff. And while other programs aren't
necessarily going to be completely free of security holes themselves,
they're less likely to be targeted and will almost certainly be safer than
MS Outlook, which has a very poor record in that department.

If people can't "be bothered", well, that's their own lookout.

Of course, some people are using computers at work or school and don't have
any say in what email program is used, or whether virus-checking is
properly implemented. They're in a tough position, especially with
something like the KakWorm, which can evidently run automatically on
Outlook when the message is viewed (*without* the user opening an
attachment) if the program settings are right and the patch hasn't been
installed. It's important to know your software; look at all those
"options" and "preferences", find out what they mean (use your online help
or printed documentation), and make sure your settings provide you with as
much safety as possible. And if you have reason to believe a worm or virus
might have been activated on the machine you're using, report it to your
system administrator ASAP.

I'd stick with the first two seasons, since it's hard to explain to newbies
why half the show doesn't have Blake in it, and I'd use Space Fall,
Pressure Point, and Star One.

These are the zines that I won't be reprinting when current stock runs out. In
other words, if you want a copy, get one while you still can.

Star One - gen anthology, already out of print from me - I think Linda Kinghts
has one copy left.

Star Two - gen anthology, I have six copies left, Linda has none (but can get
it via me).

Star Three - gen anthology, I have one copy left, Linda has two and I think Jim
Rondeau may have a couple.

The Way Back - gen anthology, (not to be confused with The Long Way Back) - I
have one copy left.

--------------

Puppeteer (slash zine - some homosexual content, not very explicit) is low on
stock (2 copies) and I may/may not reprint as the story is also available in one
of the Homosapien zines which is now back in print and I tend to dislike
duplicating stuff that is available elsewhere. On the other hand, there's some
nicely drawn (gen) illustrations in this version, so it's a maybe.

-------------

Incidentally, for a good value multimedia genzine, why not give Refractions a
try? I've got three copies of issues 3, 4 (issue 4 is all Babylon 5), 5 (issues
1, 2, 6 have sold out) and I won't have any more when those are gone.

Everything else that I print is currently okay stockwise, though I occasionally
contemplate letting Jabberwocky go out of print simply because it's a pain
having to keep all 5 volumes in print together.

Ian says he's ready to do Jarriere now he's completed Travis.

Because there's not likely to be much general demand for this figure, this is
the only one I'm going to ask for advance orders on to be sure that we
definitely get the minimum required for Ian to break even.

(Not everyone who originally requested Blake has yet ordered one, though we have
covered the break-even)

Sally, Harriet, Mistral - I believe you may have been willing to go for more
than one model apiece (painted or unpainted doesn't matter). If you (and anyone
else who is interested) goes to the web site and orders a Blake or two and puts
in the comments section that this is actually an order for Jarriere, then
Jarriere will be done as long as I end up with five orders in the next few days.
If we don't reach five, then I'll refund the money or allow you to take another
model instead. All models are the same price.

After Jarriere, Vila and Servalan are probably top of the list.

Ah ha! That's it. Hence the inacurate legend that babies are found under
goseberry bushes. It was buddlea in the original version.

However, you can still get them from me! (And from Linda Knights)
I have 6 copies of issue 3, 6 copies of issue 4, 9 copies of issue 5,
and a staggering 18 copies of issue 6 left. If you're a UK person,
pay Judith and I'll send it to you. If you're a US person, I accept
cash. Check out <http://www.foobox.net/~zines/zines> for more info.

Linda Knights is the only one you can get issues 1 and 2 from, but if
you want to print it out yourself, you can also download the PDF
versions of issues 1 and 2 from Kat's Eye Fiction
<http://eccentrix.com/artist/kat/fiction>

*If* I manage to get rid of all of issues 3 and 4, then I may consider
putting them up on the web also. If people want me to.

I just discovered that THE VIDEO CATALOG is now offering STRANGERS AND
BROTHERS in NTSC. Gareth Thomas has a small part in episodes 8 & 9 of this
13 hour epic which is on 6 videos for $99.95 plus $7.95 postage. I'm sure
no one is going to spend that amount of money on this just to get GT. He's
in the two episodes for less than 20 minutes.

However, the good news is that they asked for people to send in requests for
what else they should be offering. I am going to Email them that I would
like to see these two series done:

How Green Was My Valley BBC 6 eps. 1976
The Bell BBC 4 eps. 1982

Thomas has a lead part in both of these which the BBC has no plans to repeat
or to put out on video. If you're a Gareth fan and an American or Canadian,
why don't you write in, too? The addy is vidcat@rivertrade.com

The catch is that you have to give your name and address and I'm sure then
that you will start getting catalogs from THE VIDEO CATALOG which mainly
deals with shows from the UK.

If you're in the UK, you might consider Emailing the BBC (I don't have an
addy) and suggesting that these two series either be repeated or be put out
in PAL video.

These are two very excellent series, and I am dying to be able to get them
on video. I don't care what they cost, I will be ordering them if they ever
become available. And I do know that some other people in the past have
mentioned that they would like to get HGWMV if they ever could.

Is that the 'Strangers and Brothers' (CP Snow) I never knew that had been
filmed ?? Various expletives deleted owing to the nature of this list, but
that's one of my favourite-ever novels...

Ditto, is that the 'The Bell' (Iris Murdoch) ?? What part did GT play? I
saw that several times on bbc, and _loved_ it, and never noticed. It's
another of my all-time favourite novels.

Argh, digging out my copy now I see I have merely forgotten (nothing like a
cover photo from a novel of the series to make you remember). You seriously
mean I sat through two whole series as a kid without noticing GT in
either?? Must have had very bad taste then.

Speaking of which, as a kid, the one person who ever came close to beating
Avon as 'object of desire' was one of the characters in the S&B series --
but that was based on the book, not the bbc series. It would be dead ironic
if he'd been played by GT in the bbc version, but sadly not so. So we'll
just have to settle for _nearly_ dead ironic, which doesn't have quite the
same ring.

Argh. Now I can see myself writing Blake's Seven--Iris Murdoch--CP Snow
crossovers... watch out folks...!

I'm trying to make a connection between Animals and the rest of the Auron
theory. After all, if it was originally intended as a Cally story, and
_if_ Justin had been an Auron, there _should_ be something. But, so far,
it elludes me. Sorry, Una, my creativity is just not up to the leap,
yet.

I once wondered if an episode could have been made as a series of rock
videos, altering narrative form to fit the music (eg a gunfight
choroeographed as a disco routine, or a whole segment of the plot filmed as
a comic strip).

Then I remembered Alan Parker had already made a whole movie that way.

Soldiers of Love part 7 is now available.

I'll post a review as soon as I've listened to it, but those of you who've
followed the series so far will know pretty much what to expect. Bad puns,
smutty jokes, complex plots and pure B-movie atmosphere.

I think both Gareth Thomas and Jacqueline Pearce are in this one. I'm hoping
like mad that their characters meet as I want to hear Hywel and Madame Deephole
together (she'd probably eat him alive!), but as they were in totally different
parts of the plot this may not happen. On the other hand, Madame D was trying
to get to the same planet. I live in hope <grin>.

It can be ordered via http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7 along with the other CDs in
the series.

<So, what 2 - 4 episodes would you show to a newbie, not necessarily to hook
them or introduce them to the series, but to give them a bit of Blake's 7
flavor in this context.>

Like Dana, (I'd use 1st/2nd season, but not the same episodes (Pressure
Point & Star One are *much* more powerful IMO if you've got into the whole
thing and been drawn in and up to them). I'd suggest choosing from
Spacefall, SLD, Redemption, Shadow, Killer and Countdown, with
also-possibles Project Avalon, Breakdown and Horizon. These aren't
necessarily my favourites, but they do give a good overview of *all* the
good elements in the series. If you did decide something from the later ones
was needed, again avoiding the 'better-if-you-know-the-series' eps like City
and Rumours, I'd suggest Powerplay and Deathwatch.

Have ordered one, as promised. Am saving multiples for Soolin,
since only Sally and I seem to be wanting her.

There *will* be a Soolin. Even if I have to sell my video collection
to finance it.

But you still need appropriate wardrobe to wear while sitting at it.
Who's going to volunteer to make replicas of The Jacket, hmmm?
We'll have to draft patterns in a wide range of sizes. Can we count

I've had a couple of requests (not just Joyce <smile>) asking for copies of=

I've spoken to the theatre and these are the prices (which are very good va=

I've seen ones priced far higher than this). Please note that postage and =

are extra.

Prices are:

colour

7x5 =3D =A31.90
10x8 =3D =A33.25
16x12 =3D =A310.60
20x16 =3D =A317.65

black and white

7x5 =3D =A33
10x8 =3D =A34.25
16x12 =3D =A39.50
20x16 =3D =A317.65

They've said I can have a look at the contact sheets when I go up to see th=

You need to do some serious reading of the Gareth Thomas credits section of my
web site - but make sure you download one of the subsets as it's *very* large
and will take forever to download if you try and do the whole thing at once.

I think there's one picture there from the Bell, but it's not a terribly good
one. Gareth had one of the main parts.

Uptown Toprankin' was the first new occupant of the UK #1 slot after B7 went
on air. Which led me to realise that by by correlating nfo in Tony
Attwood's Programme Guide and the Guiness Book of British Hit SIngles, I
could produce possibly the most worthless list that ever pertained to B7,
namely what was topping the charts when the series was first broadcast. But
I would never inflict such rubbish on the Lyst, would I?

1st Season:

The Way Back, SPacefall, Cygnus ALpha, Time Squad, The Web - Mull of Kintyre
(Wings). Hanging on from the previous year, with Paul McCartney proving
Sick Boy's Grand Universal Theory of Life.
Seek-Locate-Destroy - Up Town Top Ranking (Althia and Donna). Travis nah
pop no style, him strictly roots.
Mission to Destiny - Figaro (Brotherhood of Man). Thankfully blotted from
my memory. The BoM hit was pretty bad too.
Duel, Project Avalon, Breakdown - Take A Chance on Me (Abba). Studio
filming of Mission to Destiny was delayed after Abba nicked some of the
costumes for the promotional vid.
Boutny, Deliverance, Orac - Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush). I'm not going to
make a cynical remark about this one because I like it.

2nd Season:
Redemption, Shadow, Weapon - YMCA (Village People). So it's true, B7 really
was a cultural oasis after all.
Horizon - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick (Ian Dury).
Pressure Point, Trial, Killer, Hostage - Heart of Glass (Blondie). Heart of
Stone by Kenny was 5 years too early for Avon.
Countdown, Voice From the Past - Tragedy (Bee Gees). Ties in nicely with
one of those two, at least.
Gambit, The Keeper, Star One - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor). A poignant
juxtaposition for Travis II fans.

3rd Season:
Aftermath, Powerplay - ANother Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd).
Volcano, Dawn of the Gods - Brass in Pocket (Pretenders)
Harvest, City - Too Much Too Young (Special AKA). And as I type this I'm
listening to Harvest for the World by the Isley Brothers. It just happens
to be on the 70s Hits CD I've got playing.
Children of AUron, Rumours of Death - COward of the County (Kenny Rogers).
Sarcophagus, Ultraworld - Atomic (Blondie). Two episodes notably lacking in
atomic hardware. Bad timing there.
Moloch - Together We Are Beautiful (Fern Kinney). Well, I suppose anyone
would look beautiful next to Moloch.
Deathwatch, Terminal - Going Underground (the Jam). Terminal ... Going
Underground. Yeah!

4th Season:

Rescue, Power, Traitor - Prince Charming (Adam and the Ants). Take your
pick.
Stardrive, Animals, Headhunter, Assassin - It's My PArty (Dave Stewart and
Barbara Gaskin).
Games - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic (the Police). A bit too late
for Tarrant to sing to Piri.
Sand, Gold - Under Pressure (Queen and David Bowie). Banned from Xenon Base
airplay by Lord Studsy.
Orbit - Begin the Beguine (Julio Iglesias). Oh ghod yes. *That*. Urgh!
Warlord, Blake - Don't You Want Me (Human League). Not entirely
inappropriate, especially for the thought of Avon working as a waitress in a
cocktail bar.

I've got to go to work now.

Neil, who writes lots of DOuble CApitals when he types too fast.
