Just thinking, it may have been as a reaction to a certain radio show
(that I admit not hearing all of) that I inserted a part in a fanfic
where Avon _did_ go to a nightclub. This is the first (and very
dramatic) hint that natural order has been overthrown in the universe
(well, OK, not _that_ dramatic. But something Strange is going on).

The other day at a bookstore, I came across a paperback that made no
impression on me whatsoever. I can't remember the title. The blurb on
the back evaporated from memory (I even went back to read it again and it
still wouldn't stick). I don't know who the author was or what the cover
looked like. Obviously, this sounds like a pretty dull book (amazingly,
it was part of a series - and it wasn't book one [no, I don't remember
what the number was (and I might not have even noticed if I don't make a
small point of trying, when convenient, not to start in the middle of a
series)]). I thought, after rereading the blurb, I'd at least remember
the details till I got home and could write them down.

Why did I want to write them down? So I can find book one, of course.
It may be chloroform in print, but the main character's name was Jenna...
Blake.

Obviously, I have to know what that's about.

Several people had suggested 'Star One' for this, whilst others felt that
it was an episode that would benefit from having seen more of the show
beforehand. Coincidentally, I'm reading 'Enterprising Women', and it turned
out C B-S has something to say about how new fans are introduced to new
shows, and how they reacted to 'Star One', which I thought you might find
interesting.

(The exchanges referred to are the one at the start where Avon mouths off
about wanting it finished and, of course, 'I have always trusted you, from
the very beginning.')

'Ironically, the very significance that fans find in these exchanges is so
embedded in an understanding of the series to that point that prospective
fans meeting 'Star One' as their first experience with the product leave it
knowing they have had a meaningful encounter with series fandom, but not
knowing what that meaning was supposed to be - the experience of
encountering the episode is emptied of content, has not yet taken on
symbolic meaning, and is experienced only as a potentially meaningful
moment. Fans assume, correctly in many cases, that when they have developed
the proper understanding of the series, they will fall back on the memory
of their first viewing of 'Star One' as a meaningful encounter.' [p. 140.]

Well, I had already seen most of B7 when I saw 'Star One', so I can't
comment on whether this would have been my experience. Still, it suggests
there are pros and cons of showing it: new viewers know something is going
on but aren't quite sure what, whilst getting the feeling that they really
want to see more.

At risk of boring everyone to death on this one, I will say briefly: Thanks
everyone for your massive support on this project. Keep 'em coming.

In clarification of various wibbles voiced on FC, essentially, the only
things I really won't accept are:

-- stories whose sole purpose is to take the mick about Blake's Seven
(wobbly sets...) or its characters, singly or multiply
-- crossovers
-- smut (as Neil so ably puts it)
-- poetry or non-fiction
-- stuff available on the Web

Moreover, this exclusion list is _not_ because I feel that such material is
morally wrong, squicksome, or indeed, something that I don't want to read
myself from time to time. (After all, I read loads of novels that have
absolutely nothing to do with Blake's Seven. I just don't plan on
publishing them right now.)

I've had lots of really lovely dark serious stuff featuring particularly
Blake and Avon, and am certainly not averse to having loads more, but to
balance lighter-toned pieces would also be very welcome, as would anything
featuring 'the girls' ie Jenna, Cally, Dayna, Soolin, Servalan ... you
remember them?

And to clarify, 'mixed' also means 'gen welcome' ...

Cheers folks

Re Una's perceptive thoughts on Star One:

When it comes down to it, _if_ one is trying to make converts, then showing
them a damn good episode, that makes many different people's top 10 lists,
that contains all of: adventure + science fiction + angst + drama + B-A
[[and hints of B/A]] + sparkling dialogue + concern for social consequences
of one's actions + Avon on a particularly good hair day + a cliff-hanger
ending &c&c... might just be a good thing.

If it spoils the drama a bit to have missed the run-up, well, at least the
new fan stands a chance of seeing the run-up, whereas if you show them an
ep they hate ... Actually, wasn't I one of the people who said 'no, not
Star One'...? Damn ... there goes any chance of appearing logical and
consistent ...

That's the basic idea: 'Star One' is B7 at its very best. Let 'em have it.

If anything your restrictions are tighter than mine. I suspect my blanket
ban on Bad Science might be to blame. Either that or it's personal.

If I've got such a reputation then it's probably my own fault, since some of
my material has had something of a frivolous slant. But I don't like all
humour, only certain kinds. I returned part I of Soldiers of Love to Judith
after listening to only half of it. I found it resolutely unfunny. If my
first two zines contained a lot of humour, that's because people sent me
humorous stuff. I prefer to run serious fiction.

No, they wouldn't, you pustulous web-footed reptile.

There are some editors who have some very firm ideas about how the English
language should be used. And starting sentences with conjunctions is one of
the things that can raise their hackles. Others may urge you not to
gratuitously split infinitives. Such things I personally do not on insist.

One thing I do tend to alter is unwitting Americanisms. These are usually
'comitted' (I mean, we're talking about some serious criminality here) by US
writers who are unaware of how British usage might differ. The US writers
I've tackled on this point have been unanimously happy for me to make any
necessary changes, which I would only do for dialogue spoken by the series
characters, not originals or in the main narrative prose.

Long live desktop publishing programs, plus the ability to chuck in
your own illos, and one can usually jiggle it so that it fits. If all
else fails, one can tweak the size of the font or suchlike.

The show is based on the musical and Brian gets to sing a couple of songs.

The show is almost completely sold out; if you want to see it, Thursday matinee
