I've got a theory too. Had it for years, in fact. Mrs Avon remarried to
some bloke who also had a son called Kerr (from his own previous marriage),
who was a charming, sociable lad (unlike his sulky loner of a namesake) and
hence became 'the' Kerr of the family. Leaving Avon to grow up resentful of
the name he'd been saddled with and insisting on being called just Avon.

There is also the other theory that 'Kerr' in futurespeak actually means
'Double-Crossing No-Good Ratfink Asshole Slime-ball', which would also
explain why Avon prefers not to be called Kerr.

Rosie O'Donnell, a comedian who has a daytime talk show, has three adopted
children. She mentioned on a broadcast that her youngest son was named
"Travis" for three days, until she decided he didn't really _look_ like a
Travis. She changed his name to Blake. (I kid you not.)

A sudden vision of the wheels turning in his head suddenly came to me on the
way to work (I make up fabby stories when I'm walking about... away from
pen/computer etc). Here's the general gist, with Avon's thoughts in ((...)):

> CALLY: (Touches her temple as if listening) Which are the
> forward detector links?
> AVON: What? (Pause)

((Damn. That's a good question. Which *are* the forward detector links..?!))

> AVON: Oh, ah (Pause)

((I'm pretty sure the aft detector links were to the right, so forward must
be... Right, got it...))

> AVON: Those two there.

((I hope she didn't notice how long that took. Better divert her with a well
placed question.))

> AVON: Why do you want to know that?

((Well done, Kerr my lad. She didn't notice a thing.))

> CALLY: I'm interested in your work.

((Huh?))

> AVON: (Pause) Yes.

((She's coming on to me. Better say something flippant. Um, let's see. 'Come
here often?' - don't be silly. 'Like to see the aft detector links?" - nah,
too obvious. 'Wanna see the whole console blow up and repair itself?' - hmm,
maybe that's a bit too nerdy. Perhaps I should say something nice about her
hair... but that would be too mushy. Don't want to come across as a sop. And
what if she *isn't* coming on to me? Maybe I'm just misreading it. That
would be embarrassing, if I came up with some witty chat-up line and it
really was my work she was interested and not me. Oops, she's still looking
at me... Better say *something*, *anything*...))

> AVON: (Pause) Well, I suppose I'd better go and see what it is that
> Blake wants. (Avon exits)

((Phew. That was a lucky escape. Let's see what Curly is getting so het up
about. At least I can trust *him* not to come on to me!))

Well, I could probably have done better, but I need to go and have dinner
now. :)

Weeelll, we didn't actually SEE Raiker die. He was just sucked out into
space, alive at the time. Somebody COULD (PGP style) get him out of that if
they really wanted to.....(but no HHGTTG stuff please).

eg. Those environment suits they were kited out in actually have a force
field and an oxygen supply for emergency use (alla - Star Drive)
Raiker switches it on and manages to get rescued by the crew of the London.
HE insights a revolt on the return to Earth with the more mercenary of the
crew and becomes a renegade as well, with four objectives. 1) Become rich.
2) Humiliate Avon 3) Kill Blake. Every other time we see a Federation
freighter, it not only just looks like the London, it IS the London,
crawling along after the Liberator at TD-1.4, engaging in piracy along the
way. Now imagine his dilemma when he has two of the crew on board during
Molloch. He could take the ransom for Vila and Tarrant, or he could stay out
of sight until Avon shows up as well.......

Tiger replied to my castigation of 4th Dr's disregard ofsuffering involved
in Key of Time:
>There was also the final segment of the Key, which
>was a human being. IIRC, he wasn't too concerned
>about the woman being turned into a component
> either. Romana was upset, but the Doctor wasn't.

It's a long time since I saw it, but my vague recollection was that the
Doctor pretended not to be bothered about it because he was about to use
the fact as a moral test on the bloke who'd asked him to assemble the Key.
And the bloke's callous disregard for the fate of the human being proved he
was a baddie, whereupon the Doctor sent all the components back to where
they started off; so he probably wasn't upset about the princess component
because he was already expecting to rescue her. What wasn't clear to me
was what happened to the planet which had been crushed to make a component;
if it went back to its original place in the universe, with all lost lives
restored, that's very nice, but (a) I suspected not, because it wasn't that
way when he found it, and (b) why didn't he express moral doubts about this
component to the baddie? The message I got was that he was more worried
about a single girl he'd actually met than a planetful of
people/animals/plants etc he'd only seen in cricket ball form. Interesting
to compare Blake's worries about "people he doesn't even know".

Well, if it makes you feel better - I find it just as irritating when
people send me a personal copy for no better reason than that being the

"Hhhm, they would have had to have been very close then (no mean feat where
Avon is concerned) or else why didn't the defence system just call up an
image of Avon's sister rather than her husband? "

I've always wondered why it didn't call up an image of the person supposedly
dearest to Avon's heart, ie Anna Grant? I guess because he believed she was
dead, and therefore he image would not have had the required effect, as
shown by Blake's defeat of the system when it produced images of his family,
whom he now knew to be dead due to the recent failure of his mental
conditioning. But if so, why did the defence system choose those images for
Blake, instead of someone who was still alive that Blake cared about, say
Inga or Ushton?

2 possibilities.
1) Said sister is deceased, or believed to be. Thus, bringing up the
image would not effect Avon properly, as it was the knowlege Blake had
that his own relatives were deceased that enabled him to resist.
2) Avon likes his brother in law much better than his sister. If they
are of similiar natures, Kerr and sister might mutually irritate. Amiyak
is someone calm and yet witty/charming enough to woo the sister; he can
get along well with Kerr, too.

It just hit me! It's so obvious! There are LOTS of cultures where the
FAMILY name comes FIRST! Avon's family, the Kerrs, obviously follow this
tradition!

Boy, he must be sick of all these people he barely admits knowing calling

Reminds me of a pianist I used to know. Whenever anyone said something
like, "I wish I could play like that." he'd say, "It's easy. Just
practice for 8 hours a day for 10 years."

Maybe it's just that I have trouble seeing that kind of patience in
Dayna. Unless it involves blowing things up. But then, she hasn't had
much chance to indulge her nonviolent side since meeting Avon.

Possibility 1) Zen was preset to seek out images of relatives.

Possibility 2) In Rumours of Death, Avon didn't doubt he could withstand
Federation Security's torture sessions. In Killer, he admitted to keeping
quiet about Tynus' part in his scam. Let's assume he had been
interrogated before. Nothing like what Blake had been through but enough
that he'd gotten used to repressing Anna's image from where psyche
technicians (or whatever) could get at it (yes, this raises lots of
questions about Terminal, but not unsolveable ones [Servalan was using
the new, improved model. Also good for brighter, whiter teeth (oh, I
hadn't made up a Tarrant connection? clumsy me ...)

Possibility 3) Zen sorted memories alphabetically. Avon, Brother came up
before Grant, Anna (this holds for Blake, since Blake, Mommy came up
before Rushton, Uncle).

Possibility 4) Zen's setting wasn't necessarily for who they were closest
too but for who they would cave the quickest to, not necessarily the same
thing.

Well, it could be along the line of the Roman names - Something Kerr Avon (a
la Gaius Julius Caesar). Or Kerr Something Avon. The last is better; to my
knowledge, the beforementioned Roman Emperor was known as Gaius Caesar, and
it still lets the man in black (leather) be known by the usual four letters.

Weeelll, we didn't actually SEE Raiker die. He was just sucked out into

and the 4th objective would be? :)

maybe because he was, on some level, still partly copnvinced that they were
alive and it was only when he was confronted by the images from the defence
system that he finally realised that they weren't? He does look pained for a
while.

Avon must have a full brother, and either another brother or a
sister...couldn't be a middle child otherwise. The story I'm working on much
is revealed as to home life chez Avon (and why his first name isn't exactly
Kerr). By a similar process of deduction, we can place his birthday within a
month (obvious enough to name a spaceship after)--third week in October to
third week in November.

Re discussion of crew skills: Blake must have a keen sense of history to go
with his tactics--how else could he be working out of the Crimean War
playbook?

As I was pondering why my keyboard has a full-size Caps Lock key, and what
idiot put it THERE, several B7 macros came to mind:
Vila: [BRK]-[ENTR]
Tarrant Nostra: [DEL]-[DEL]-[DEL]-[DEL]
The various [ALT]-[CTRL]-[ENTR] combinations involving Slash and Backslash
should no doubt be discussed elsewhere...

PS: Inter@active Week mentions a company called Xros, which is pronounced
Kairos. Also has lots of pictures of penguins in the Linux article.

exuses and apologies

Okay i know everyone runs these things in spare time

2 years for the Con videos from Deliverance 98 is
dreadful (yeah i know i've read all the exuses in the
newsletter and the mailshot!)

Hi

I was just browsing around Judith's site on the net
whilst i had a spare half hour and i cam accross the
pictures from the upcoming colectors lot on channel 4
it looks like it is going to be a superb programme

it is an impressive collection and what a fantastic
set, i was bowled over by it at deliverance and it
looks even better (if that's possible!)

I shall look forward to watching it next week

Emily

OK it is VERY late. OK it is very light compared to the usual offering.

But

1) They have apologised, and were not paying for this one. If people want to
help out to shorten the delays, I'm sure they would be welcome.

2) Even if that was the usual quarterly newsletter, it is infinitely better
than a lot of other fan clubs. I think it is good value for money.
