I've updated the caption contest on my web site. This month's pictures
are from "The Legend of Robin Hood", with Paul Darrow as the Sheriff of
Nottingham. I've also put up 3 extra pictures that show PD and his
beard a little better than the ones for captioning. The caption photos
include two from the Bath Scene. If anyone has a better copy of the
tape, I'd be happy to do more frame grabs.

URL is: http://pages.cthome.net/blakes7/ccurrent.html

Last month's captions for the "Star Maidens" pictures and episode
comments for "Aftermath" are also now up.

Well I suppose she does have certain character traits in common
with the Daphne du Maurier Rebecca, however I think Gwendoline suits her
better (despite being as different from dear old
Gwendoline Mary Lacey as anyone could possibly be)

Today, while buying a comic
for my almost four-year old, I was intrigued
to see that the contents included instructions
to "Build your own Travis".

What!!? With visions of.....
"You will need one eye patch,
         lots of black leather,
some safe glue and an adult to help you"
I turned the pages.

Could it possibly be?

Well no. Actually this Travis is a character in
"Bob the Builder" and appears to be
some sort of steamroller
that we are meant to construct out of old toilet
rolls and drinking straws. Still it was a nice thought
while it lasted.

Thank you, Mistral. I see we've been keeping up the occaisional bounce
for Tramila?

And I think your assessment of Servalan's status fits her behavior and
so forth very well. She's too comfortable with wealth to be unused to
it, IMHO. But that viscious streak of hers coming from a deep feeling of
threat, the thought that others might find out she isn't 'qualified'--
very intriguing. And we never do see her showing much sign of
book-smarts; it's manipulation of people where she shines, and that
might not be int he tests. Although, really, to find good leaders, it
should be.

Rob: Good story, but Oxford's Boat Club is not, one hopes, as corrupt as
the Federation.

Still, brings up the idea-- she *was* qualified for Alpha due to
leadership skills, but developed a bit of personal paranoia that those
who were qualified for it by 'book-smarts' looked down on her, and might
undermine her?

*********

In regards to Servalan's name... my family says it sounds like the brand
name of a vacuum cleaner. Of course, aesethics have surelly changed with
time, but a modern-day woman would probably be better of as Hermione. :)

Re: Bacterial screening--not the same as viral screening. I've come in
on the middle of this but here's how they could handle the beneficial
bacteria question: after the first bout of indegestion, Jenna ordered
beneficial bacterial samples delivered from a medical supply company.
These were scanned in the medi-lab on board the Liberator, and Zen
accepted the data as an organism not to be screened out.
In regards to using the teleport to cure someone, an anti-bacterial
screening would not be the same as anti-viral. I would be reluctant to
teleport up a plague-carrier in the *hopes* it was bacterial, rather
than viral.I'd want to test them first, if at all possible. Which, given
the super-diseases the crew faced, was *not* possible. But routine
screening for bacteria might be built in, to avoid the 'War of the
Worlds' syndrome-- picking up alien bacteria that may have malignant
side effects.
Or Zen and the teleport may scan and allow someone on with whatever
microorganisms they have on them the first time. After that, it screens
out any *new* foreign substances. Which means, you can beam up ill
crewmembers safely, but not newcomers; that beneficial bacteria would
only be screened out in the unlikely event that the person was deficient
in them the first time; and a deformed or alien creature would not be
screened out due to genetic abnormality, because whatever it is the
first time it's teleported up is considered normal for *it*.

People like driving Kerr up the wall because he is so generally in
people's minds a straight man by nature. He takes things very
seriously, which Vila doesn't. He gets very tense, and he can't help
expressing his annoyance, in ways which, if you don't have to endure
them up close, are rather entertaining.

Finally, 5 episodes for the desert island:
Aftermath, Gambit, Horizon, Headhunter, and possibly Sarcphagus, which
is certainly not on my list of favorites, due to the psuedo-fantasy
content, and yet for that reason, would make a good change-up from the
rest. Star One is definitely a candidate. But tell me, what desert
island is going to have a TV, VCR and power?

--Avona, who, as you can tell, is subscribed to the digest.

Two sets of desert islands here.

Countdown, Rumours of Death, Sand, Sarcophagus, (a long time later) Pressure
Point

(Jackie)

Harvest of Kairos, Aftermath, Blake, Seek Locate Destroy, City at the
Edge...

(Andrew)

To be faithful to the series, should we select SEVEN ?

Another game we have played based on squash ladders.....

Put all of the episodes in a random order. Pick an adjacent pair of
episodes at random. Debate if they are the correct way around. See how long
it takes to get it to settle down. Anybody played before. Anybody want to
play now ?

As you may already know, Gareth Thomas is appearing in 'The Clearing' a play set
at the time of Cromwell's invasion of Ireland. (It won the Time Out and John
Whiting awards when it premiered in London, so it's a play with a good pedigree)

Full dates for the tour which takes in Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh and Liverpool,
are on my web site (and Horizon's too), but if anyone is interested in seeing
the play in Edinburgh, 8-23 October, then drop me a line as Stellar Quines (the
theatre company) have given me a batch of flyers and I'll happily post one to
anyone considering going to the play.

I'm hoping to go on the 9th - I just have to finalise transport - it's a long
way from Dorset... (So, I'm nuts, but it's a very enjoyable way to be nuts.
An excuse to watch good quality, live theatre is always worth having.)

Photos of the cast of Soldiers of Love (including Gareth Thomas) are now
available - the group photo also includes Michael Keating.

There are autographed scripts available of episodes 3, 4 which have already been
recorded but are not yet available as CDs. (They had to bring forward the
recording schedule because of Gareth's part in 'The Clearing'.)

Autographs include Gareth and Michael (and Jacquline Pearce on the second
episode script which only has one copy left).

Full details of what is available, and the prices, can be found on my web site -
http://www.hermit.org/Blakes7 Photos are from 6 pounds (inc UK postage).

There's also reviews of the two episodes currently available. In a nutshell,
they are suitable for people with a smutty sense of humour who aren't looking
for serious social comment. It's an audio comic book, full of jokes and larger
than life characters.

First of all mea culpa, I quoted Servalan as *saying* the word 'Beta' in
Weapon, and neither she nor Travis actually does in the scene I was thinking
of...they're just rather (IMO) suggestively, stridently contemptuous of the
grading.

Secondly, I would name her Livia or Lilith if I was being nice, or some
appalling childhood blight of a name as I probably aren't? (Hepzibah? Pansy?
Charity?).

Thirdly (and nothing to do with the Supreme Commander), a point I noticed in
Weapon...

CALLY: Sooner or later, Blake is going to attack Federation Central Control
on Earth itself.
VILA: Later. Much later.
AVON: And alone, probably.

Two episodes later, he's not only going, he's telling Blake (seemingly
sincerely - he sounds mildly puzzled to me) "I am surprised you ever doubted
it."

So where and why did he change his admittedly contradictory mind? (and no
prizes for "when the scriptwriters wanted him to".) Presumably when he
thought up a good selfish reason that Blake might swallow...

Charity! Sally, that's perfect. She has none. Like naming someone Prudence,
who grows up to display a distinct lack of it. <grin> Or giving Vila a name
like Thou-shalt-not-steal Restal.

Gee, I was thinking more along the lines of Boopsie Servalan...

How about Nigel Travis for Travis I.

Phwaoarrrhh Travis for Travis II.

And, of course, Stephen Hawkings Jarriere.

Something so plain it made her work like mad to rise above it. Joan? Edith?

Or something hideously ugly, something she had to out-glam with high heels
and white. Morag, maybe.

I wonder who had the idea for this one.

Telstra's Phoneaway cards, amongst all the other spoken instructions, tell

Unfortunately, the options don't allow you to call Andromeda for free

Had a long chat on the phone with Judith P the other night, and we got onto
Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue (alas not the same without Willy
Rushton). Which in turn reminded me that during the AltaZine days I'd put
out a request for guests to the Blake's 7 Ball.

(For those unfamiliar with ISIHAC, the exercise of the 'ball game' is to
produce a guest list built from the most tortuous and groan-inducing puns
you think you can get away with. Such as - at the musicians' ball - Mr and
Mrs Raboom with their District Attorney daughter, Tara Raboom D.A.)

The first guests are now arriving. Please raise your glasses to:

Mr and Mrs Rationtrooper and their militaristic son, Freddy Rationtrooper.

Mr and Mrs Rator and their enormous but elegant daughter, Libby.

And by special invitation, Mr and Mrs Lon, who recently became the proud
parents of quins. They've bought the youngest with them - Baby Lon 5.

(Yeah, we can let other TVSF guests in. Gotta fill the ballroom somehow...)

Umm, 'The Way Back', 'Space Fall', 'Sarcophagus', 'Blake', and 'Rumours of
Death'.

I don't have to take Trevor Hoyle's novelization instead of the complete
works of Shakespeare, do I?

Jarriere's first name is Obadiah. Please don't ask me why, it just is. (as

Precisely why we chose "Peggy Sue" Servalan for Bizarro 7.

And please have at hand your Alka Seltzer for those worried parents: Mr and
Mrs Alpha and their invalid daughter, Sick Ness Alpha.

And let's not forget Old Father Time, bringing with him one of his four
children, Time's Quad.

Oh Christ, I'm only four episodes in. This could take up the whole day.

Hmm. Okay, I'll try it. How about:

Mr. and Mrs. Tareau, and their son, radio personality Ken Tareau.

Mr. and Mrs. Neame-Hull, and their son, astronautics engineer
                                                     Hercule A. Neame-Hull

Mr. and Mrs. Steeth; their son couldn't make it, but they've brought
one of his school chums: Annie, classmate of Ilya Steeth.

Bad puns R us,
Mistral

Mr and Mrs Safe and their depressed daughter
down Ann Safe.

Mr and Mrs Response could not decide whether to bring their
unmarried, entertaining boy (who is embarassed by his first
name) or his more serious brother. Therefore they will be
accompanied by the single, fun son I. Sam or Vic Response.
(sorry about that)
