Anonymous FTP ftp.lysator.liu.se -- This is /pub/gopher/README Questions to Lars Aronsson . This file was last updated on 18 April 1993. Hello and welcome to the world of Gophers! The Gopher is a piece of software written at the University of Minnesota. If you live outside of Europe, you should probably look for anonymous FTP files at boombox.micro.umn.edu CD /pub/gopher. The Gopher is a network information browser. You run a client program that connects to various servers at various places on the Internet. Stored in these servers are different kinds of information, most often in a simple text format, but the system also allows for pictures and sound recordings to be transferred. You can also run your own Gopher information server. Users at remote sites can easily browse through the information you provide. The gopher software package (gopher1.01.tar.Z) contains a client, a server and some other useful stuff. There is also a client program for the X Window System in file xgopher.1.1a.tar.Z. The file FILES lists the contents of the tar.Z archives. The software will run on most flavors of UNIX. We run it on Suns and a Sequent Balance 8000. Once your Gopher client runs, you are welcome to connect to our server at gopher.lysator.liu.se port 70. To get more information, check the anonymous FTP archive at boombox.micro.umn.edu directory /pub/gopher. There is also a USENET newsgroup called alt.gopher.
